Summary
A little one s unbridled enthusiasm is a mother s special challenge in this tender, amusing story that offers a sweet final twist. Wilf is a little mouse who is bursting with energy and full of fun. He loves to run and skip and climb and jump around. He s so busy, in fact, that he just doesn t have time to listen to his mother s pleas to "Watch out, Wilf!" until it s too late and crash bang wallop! Uh-oh. What has Wilf done now? With affection and humor, Jan Fearnley paints an endearing portrait of an effusive, disaster-prone child and an ever-patient mom. Distributed by Syndetic Solutions, Inc.
School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 1-Wilf is a little mouse who has a problem with listening. So, "Crash, bang, wallop!"-he's always having accidents. Each time his mother soothes him and gently cleans him up, she says, "I wish you'd listen to me." Wilf's enthusiastic misadventures are illustrated in large ink-and-watercolor paintings that are filled with movement and energy. The characters look like animals but move like people. The artist uses color delicately to create a small and perfect imaginary world brimming with naturalistic flora, where mice live in a pumpkin cottage with a blue front door. Children will readily identify with this dynamic little creature who manages to maintain his good humor after every mishap. They will also enjoy (and join in on) the refrain and find the role reversal at the end very satisfying. This is a great book to read aloud near Mother's Day, although the relationship between mother and son is timeless.-Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. Booklist Review
PreS-Gr. 2. Wilf, a little brown mouse, is very busy running, skipping, climbing, playing, and jumping, but he's not good at listening to his mother. When she tells him, Don't dangle in the dahlias! he's too busy climbing like a monkey to pay attention, and he ends up on the ground. After a day filled with Wilf's rambunctious mishaps, Mommy is tired, so Wilf makes a surprise to cheer her up. He carefully brings her a tray of supper, but when she reaches for an appreciative cuddle, everything spills. The large format and soft watercolor-and-ink illustrations perfectly demonstrate Wilf's exuberance and animatedly depict his numerous falls. The words crash, bang, and wallop, which appear in large type after each calamity, will invite participation from lap-sitters, who will delight in Wilf's high-energy tumbles and the turn-about ending. This is a tender, amusing offering, accomplished with unbridled enthusiasm that is sure to be catching. --Julie Cummins Copyright 2004 Booklist From: Syndetics Solutions, Inc.
